Specialist in taxonomy of fungi, in particular of Agaricales and Boletales (Basidiomycetes), and to some extent also of Phoma (Deuteromycetes). Currently involved in the long-term Flora agaricina neerlandica project, which envisages the publication of a critical flora in 11 volumes of all 2200 species occurring in Western Europe. Monographic studies in Entolomataceae include Europe, North. America, Australia, and Malesia, in co-operation with local mycologists. Other projects involve a European monographs of Marasmiioid and Collybioid fungi, Hemimycena and related genera, and Melanoleuca in co-operation with Dr. Vladimir Antonín, Botanical Museum, Brno, Czech Republic, and an European monograph of Lactarius, together with Prof. Dr. Annemieke Verbeken, University of Gent, Belgium. Graduate teaching is done in form of courses in mycology for student of the Leiden University, and PhD Projects on the phylogeny and speciation in Leccinum (Boletales) and Entolomataceae (Agaricales).
