- The Leiden branch of the National Herbarium of The Netherlands was founded in 1829. The earliest collections were those from the Dutch East Indies collected by its first director C.L. Blume, and the Japanese collections assembled by P.F. Siebold.

For the seed plants the collections from The Netherlands (and Europe), and the Malesian region are the most comprehensive. For the mosses, algae, and fungi specialization is worldwide.
